Prior to commencing trials within a community, it is essential that the community is educated, involved in all processes and informed of all aspects of clinical trials. The Community Advisory Forum was established in 2002 in conjunction with the Clinical HIV Research Unit to fulfil this function.
The CAF at Witkoppen Clinic was established in 2012. It comprises a varied group of volunteers who assist in the planning, development and implementation of HIV and TB drugs trials, serving as a voice for the community and study participants. They also strengthen community mobilization, awareness and involvement in clinical drug research, educating communities about HIV/TB disease and treatment, and identify and address community concerns and perceptions about clinical trials.
