HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) is offered at Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre to all patients daily (Mon- Fri) on a free of charge basis. HCT is done by our experienced, trained lay counsellors in private counselling rooms. HCT is provider-initiated (PICT), whereby patients are pre-test counselled and then have the option to refuse testing. This includes all patients with unknown status or negative status with the previous test done more than 3 months ago, regardless of reason for accessing care at Witkoppen Clinic. Wherever possible, all children under the age of 12 are tested once for HIV (with consent from their parent/guardian), regardless of risk. The entire counselling and testing process is handled by counsellors.
Our counsellors are empathetic to individual patients' needs. The different types of counselling include:
- Pre-test counselling;
- Post-test counselling;
- Adherence counselling for patients about to commence antiretroviral treatment;
- Ongoing counselling for patients who require additional counselling at any stage of HIV disease;
- Re-adherence counselling for patients on antiretroviral treatment who are experiencing challenges in adhering to their particular treatment protocols;
- Group counselling, including caregiver support for persons caring for a child with HIV.
Newly diagnosed HIV positive patients have their CD4 count done on the same day and are given a follow up appointment for our dedicated HIV clinic.
HCT at Witkoppen Clinic is funded by PEPFAR (the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) through a grant from USAID.
