Mam CaveWitkoppen is traditionally perceived to be a clinic for “Moms and babies” and the notion of standing in the same queue with women and crying babies often evokes uneasiness in most men in need of health care. Furthermore, it is common knowledge that most men find opening up to female clinicians about intimate male related health conditions, extremely awkward.

Following input from men interviewed during normal consultations, Mvuselelo was born and the clinic is operated by an all-male staff including a professional nurse, a counsellor for HIV Testing Services (HTS) and a Vitals Assistant. Although the clinic is primarily set up to reduce HIV- associated stigma, it offers a one stop shop for men and offers the following comprehensive health services:

  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
  • Acute conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • HIV counselling and testing
  • Health education
  • Adherence counselling

Currently Mvuselelo is open from 07:30-16:00 Monday to Friday, but may be subject to change based on input from men who link into care through the HIV self-test route.

Mam CaveReferrals are made internally to the following departments: Tuberculosis, Advanced HIV care, Psychology, Mental Health, Audiology, Dental and Emergency Room for minor emergencies. External referrals are also made to the Urologist and for Medical Male Circumcision procedures.

The structural and interior design of Mvuselelo is a direct product of intensive consultations with attending men. Men provided valuable input into the colour scheme, furniture and logo for the clinic. They also provided input into features they felt should be added. Mvuselelo creates an environment where men can relax and feel free to express their health related problems and receive the necessary attention from a team of experienced and well equipped staff.
